At
the conclusion of Tuesday's NBA Draft Lottery in New York City a
couple cities can now start to see the light after going through a
dark disappointing losing season and quite frankly years of struggle.
So for cities like Phoenix, Arizona and Sacramento, California, their
Basketball luck has just went up. We can now start the debate to
where future NBA Stars like Arizona's DeAndre Ayton, Duke's Marvin
Bagely, and International Star Luka Doncic will land in this year's
upcoming draft. Here at TrueFan we will give educated guesses,
prospect analysis and opinions to where these young basketball
prospects might land in June. Here's my first post-lottery 2018 Mock
Draft.
1)
Phoenix Suns
Select DeAndre Ayton
Position: Center
College: Arizona
HT: 7-0”(Wingspan 7-5”)
WT: 260 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Franchise Center/NBA MVP
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Joel Embiid, David
Robinson, Patrick Ewing, DeMarcus Cousins
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
With the number pick in the 2018 Draft the Phoenix Suns
have a relatively easy choice as Ayton stands by himself as the best
prospect in this year's draft. Ayton checks all the boxes of a future
dominant Big Man in the modern NBA. Ayton paired with the Suns young
nucleus of SG Devin Booker, SF Josh Jackson, and PF Marquese Chriss
can make for a great young team. This young group could build
together with new young head coach Igor Kokoskov and become a threat
in the West within 3 seasons.
2)
Sacramento Kings
Select Luka Doncic
Position: SG/PG/SF
College: International Real Madrid
HT: 6'8”(Wingspan 6-11”)
WT: 225 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: All-Star
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Goran Dragic, Drazen
Petrovic, Candler Parsons, Steve Smith, Manu Ginobili, Sam Cassell
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
Luka Doncic is the most polarizing prospect in this
year's draft, very similar to Lakers Point Guard Lonzo Ball in last
year's draft. Doncic has a well developed offensive game and a feel
and IQ for the offensive side of the court that is beyond his years.
Doncic might have shortcomings in other areas of his game but adding
him with D'Aaron Fox and Willie Cauley-Stein in Sacramento could be a
great fit. Duke's Marvin Bagley, Missouri's Michael Porter, and Texas
Mo Bamba also could be real options for the Kings at this spot.
3)
Atlanta Hawks
Select Marvin Bagley
Position: PF/SF
College: Duke
HT: 6-11”(Wingspan 7-1”)
WT: 235 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: All-Star
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Kevin Garnett, Michael
Beasley, Antawn Jamison, Elvin Hayes
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
The Atlanta Hawks enter this draft in complete rebuild
mode after releasing their elite Head Coach Mike Budenholzer. Duke's
Marvin Bagley stands out as the best prospect available at this pick.
Bagley has as much potential as any player in this draft and could
end up being a yearly All-Star, averaging 20 pts 10 Rebounds and
making daily highlights from the Left-Hand in Atlanta like Josh Smith
did for years.
4)
Memphis Grizzilies
Select Michael Porter Jr
Position: SF
College: Missouri
HT: 6-10”(Wingspan 7-0”)
WT: 215 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: All-Star
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Tobias Harris, Glen
Rice, Danilo Galinari, Rashard Lewis, Cliff Robinson
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
For the Memphis Grizzlies, they easily take Michael
Porter Jr here. Unlike most of the teams drafting this high, the
Grizzlies are actually a good team that expects to compete for the
playoffs next season. So rather than take a young prospect that might
take years to develop to contribute, a prospect like Porter can
become the Grizzlies Jayson Tatum in 2018-19 with this selection.
Porter would fit well alongside Marc Gasol, Mike Conley, and Jarell
Martin.
5)
Dallas Mavericks
Select Jaren Jackson Jr
Position: PF/C
College: Michigan St
HT: 6-11”(Wingspan 7-4”)
WT: 240 Lbs
TrueFan Potential : Franchise Power Forward
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Horace Grant, Chris
Bosh, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Larry Nance Sr
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
Jaren Jackson has the chance in my opinion to become one
of the better players in the NBA for the next 10 years. For Dallas
this would be a heaven made pick. Jackson would be able to play
alongside and be mentored by Maverick Legend Dirk Nowitski as Dirk
passes the mantle to Jackson. Jackson has all the skills to become a
Franchise level player for Dallas if they are to pick Jackson Jr.
6)
Orlando Magic
Select Trae Young
Position: PG
College: Oklahoma
HT: 6-2”(Wingspan 6-4”)
WT: 180 Lbs
TrueFan Potential : Starter
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Mike Bibby, Nick Van
Exel, Gail Goodrich, Steve Nash
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
With Orlando firing head coach Frank Vogel, their new
adminstration will most likely be searching for a new face of the
Franchise. Trae Young has already created something of a celebrity
for himself in college basketball. The Magic most likely grab at the
chance to get Young to man their backcourt and to put fans in the
seats.
7)
Chicago Bulls
Select Mohamed Bamba
Position: Center
College: Texas
HT: 7-0”(Wingspan 7-9”)
WT: 220 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Franchise Center/ DPOY
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Marcus Camby, Rasheed
Wallace, Anthony Davis, Kristaps Porzingis, Serge Ibaka
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
In my opinon Mo Bamba might become the best player in
this entire draft. I see Bamba as having a Anthony Davis like
potential with a Kristaps Porzinigs like basketball game. For the
Chicago Bulls this would be a supreme pick. To add Bamba to their
young nucleus of Kris Dunn, Lauri Markkannen, Zach Levine, and Denzel
Valentine would put the Bulls on par with any of the young Eastern
Conference rising teams.
8)
Cleveland Cavaliers
Select Collin Sexton
Position: PG
College: Alabama
HT: 6-3”(Wingspan 6-6”)
WT: 185 Lbs
TrueFan Potential : All-Star/ Franchise PG
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Mookie Blaylock, Eric
Bledsoe, Kyle Lowry, Terrell Brandon
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
If the Cav's are to be so lucky that Alabama Point Guard
prospect Colin Sexton were to fall to them, they should consider
themselves lottery winners. For the Cleveland Cavaliers, Colin Sexton
would be the perfect replacement for now long gone Kyrie Irving.
Sexton is an aggressive Point Guard that can create his own shot but
has the mentality for the biggest stages. Picking Colin Sexton could
be one real reason why LeBron James stays in Cleveland and wins
another championship.
9)
New York Knicks
Select Mikal Bridges
Position: SF/SG
College: Villanova
HT: 6-8”(Wingspan 7-1”)
WT: 210 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Starter/ All-Defensive Teams
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Wesley Person, Paul
George, Otto Porter Jr, Scottie Pippen
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
For the New York Knicks, they find themselves in perhaps
the best possible spot their franchise has been in 30 years. Here the
Knicks can choose best Guard available, or best Bigman available, or
best Wing player available. With the Knicks new leadership preaching
defense and pushing for players with athleticism, length, and winning
pedigree, the most closely matching player in the entire draft to
that is Villanova's SF Mikal Bridges. Bridges comes in to the draft
after winning the NCAA National Championship this past season and as the notable draft's best
defender and defensive player. In my opinion, with adding Bridges here and the recent addition of David Fizdale as Head
Coach, the Knicks will have a top 5 ranked defense in a years time in the 2019-20 NBA
Season.
10)
Philadelphia 76ers
Select Lonnie Walker
Position: SG
College: Miami
HT: 6-4”(Wingspan 6-10”)
WT: 200 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Starter
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Iman Shumpert, Dwyane
Wade, Mitch Richmond, Eddie Jones, Eric Gordon
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
Lonnie Walker would be a homerun fit with the great
young Philadelphia 76ers team. Walker is a super-athletic Shooting
Guard who can really shoot well from long range. Walker would be the Jr Smith for the 76ers that Smith has been with the championship winning Cavaliers. Adding Walker with
Markelle Fultz, Ben Simmons, Dario Saric, and Joel Embiid could make
for a scary starting 5 in Phila for the next 5 to 10 years.
11)
Charlotte Hornets
Select Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Position: PG/SG
College: Kentucky
HT: 6-6”(Wingspan 6-11”)
WT: 180 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Starter
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Dejounte Murray, Michael
Carter-Williams, Brian Shaw, Jrue Holiday, Dante Exum
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
With Rumors abound everywhere that Kemba Walker's time
in Charlotte is coming to a end, I expect the Hornets to look at
Kentucky's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Gilgeous-Alexander is a great
combo guard that would be a great match to pair alongside former
Kentucky Wild Cat and 2017 Hornets Lottery pick SG Malik Monk.
12)
Los Angeles Clippers
Select Wendall Carter
Position: PF/C
College: Duke
HT: 6-10”(Wingspan 7-3”)
WT: 260 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Starter
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Channing Frye, Myles
Turner, Al Jefferson, Elton Brand, Al Harford
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
With Blake Griffin traded and gone from the Clippers,
Wendall Carter could become a great replacement to match up in the
frontcourt with DeAndre Jordan for the LA Clippers. Carter offers a
versatile offensive game that could compliment Jordan better than
Griffin and could eventually become the Clippers offensive
focal-point.
13) Los Angeles Clippers
Select Anfernee Simons
Position: PG/SG
College: High School, IMG Academy
HT: 6-4”(Wingspan 6-7”)
WT: 175 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Starter/Possible All-Star
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: D'Angelo Russell, Lou
Williams, Steph Curry, Jeff Hornacek, Malik Monk
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
With this being the Clippers second of two top 14 picks
in the draft, I could expect the Clippers to take more risk and take
a leap at a player with great potential. That player to me is high
school prospect Anfernee Simons. Simons at barely 18 years old,
appears to me to have a game that could evolve to current Clippers
Shooting Guard Lou Williams. In my opinion, if the Clippers where to
build around Simons this young the Clippers could end up with a
Damian Lillard level Star with this pick.
14)
Denver Nuggets
Select Kevin Knox
Positon: SF
College: Kentucky
HT: 6-9”( Wingspan 7-0”)
WT: 215 Lbs
TrueFan Potential: Starter/ Possible All-Star
TrueFan Pro Player Comparisons: Rudy Gay, Antonie
Walker, Rashard Lewis, Tayshaun Prince, Hedo Turkoglu
TrueFan Pick Quick Take:
With Denver possibly losing both Wilson Chandler and
Will Barton this off-season Kevin Knox would be the perfect pick.
Knox could easily blend his skills and talents with the Nuggets
current core of Center Nikola Jokic, Power Forward Paul Millsap,
Shooting Guard Gary Harris and Point Guard Jamal Murray. Knox scoring
versatility and on-defense would make for a great addition.
