Breakdown
The
2017-18 New York Knicks season will be about building chemistry and
building an identity. I believe this year will be mostly about the
development and ascension of Knicks Young Superstar Kristaps
Porzingis. Porzingis has already looked great in this year's
EuroBasket Tournament helping lead his Latvian National Team to a
deep run. Porzingis will benefit from another year with Carmelo
Anthony sharing the floor with him. With the two forming a great
relationship and rapport Melo will continue to mentor and help
Porzingis reach his immense potential. As for Carmelo Anthony this
will be a unique season for the Knicks current in-house Superstar. I
believe he will continue to score at a great clip and be a great
floor spacer for Porzingis and Knicks biggest off-season signing SG
Tim Hardaway Jr. For Hardaway Jr, I expect his best statistical
season of his career and a fringe all-star campaign. Coming into his
prime and being the son of an NBA great, we can expect big games for
Hardaway Jr this year in Madison Square Garden. Hardaway in addition
to Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis should be this year's
Knicks biggest contributors.
However
the Knicks this year are pushing their youth movement. So we will
keep a keen eye on their young building prospect players like C Willy
Hernangomez, PG Frank Nitlikina, G Ron Baker, and SG Damyean Dotson.
Hernangomez had a great rookie season last year and currently is
playing very well in the EuroBasket tournament playing with the
undefeated Spain National Team. I see Hernangomez getting much more
opportunities this year and quite possibly becoming the main starter
at the Center position this season over incumbent C Joakim Noah. The
other young piece that Knicks brass will focus on is 1st
round pick( 8th overall) PG Frank Nitlikina. I expect
Nitlikina to have his struggles adjusting to the NBA at 19 years old
and his first year playing in New York City. However I feel we will
be able to see Nitlikina's impact on the Knicks as the season wears
on. As a pass-first defensively strong point guard, I feel
Nitlikina's defensive numbers will be great and he will shoot well
while having great passing numbers as a Rookie. I don't believe he
will score like rookies Markelle Fultz or Dennis Smith Jr, but I feel
his defensive rating and win shared will be better.
I
believe with the off-season signings of PG Ramon Sessions and F
Michael Beasley, we will also see an improved Knicks bench. We can
assume Courtney Lee will move to a 6th man position and
that Joakim Noah will eventually become a presence off the Knicks
bench this season. Those two veterans coming off the bench should
give the Knicks solid depth. This year will be a pleasant challenge
for Head Coach Jeff Hornacek to fit these pieces together for a
successful season in New York City. However, What is a successful
season for these 2018 Knicks is the question.
